Why Your AC Runs All Day and the House Still Won't Cool

You set the thermostat to 72. Two hours later it still reads 78, and the unit hasn't shut off once. That's not your imagination, and it's not a broken thermostat. A properly working AC cycles on and off. If yours is running continuously and the house still won't drop to setpoint, something in the system isn't doing its job, and the outdoor unit and the thermostat are the last places to look, not the first.

Start with what you can check yourself

Before you call anyone, a few minutes outside and at the thermostat can tell you a lot.

  • Pull the air filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it. A clogged filter starves the system of airflow and is the single most common cause of a house that won't cool.
  • Walk out to the outdoor unit (the condenser) and look at the fins. Grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, leaves, and pine straw pack into the sides and choke off airflow, especially under pines here in Spring.
  • Check that nothing is stacked against the condenser. It needs open air on all sides, at least a couple of feet, to reject heat.
  • Walk the house and make sure vents aren't closed or blocked by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Closing vents to "push air elsewhere" usually backfires and starves the whole system.
  • Check where the thermostat is mounted. One near a lamp, a sunny window, or a kitchen will read warmer than the rest of the house and run the system longer than it needs to.

The number a technician actually checks

When we get called out for "it runs constantly and won't cool," the first thing we measure is the temperature split, the difference between the air going into the return and the air coming out of a supply vent. A healthy system typically pulls that air down 16 to 22 degrees. If the drop is smaller than that, the system is moving air, but that air isn't picking up the heat it should. That's the difference between a fan blowing and an air conditioner actually conditioning.

What causes a weak split

A few things show up over and over. Low refrigerant charge, usually from a slow leak, means the system doesn't have enough refrigerant to absorb heat efficiently, so it runs and runs without catching up. A dirty evaporator coil (the one inside the air handler, usually in the attic) acts like a scarf over the whole system, blocking the heat exchange even if everything else is fine. And sometimes the honest answer is that the unit is undersized for the house, especially if a room addition, a converted garage, or a finished attic space got added after the AC was installed and nobody resized the equipment to match.

Why it's worse in a Spring, TX August

Gulf Coast humidity adds a second job the system has to do. It's not just pulling heat out of the air, it's also pulling moisture out, and that second job takes real capacity. On a marginal system, the humidity load is often what pushes it from "keeps up most days" to "never shuts off." That's why the same unit that seemed fine in April can look like it's failing by late July, even though nothing actually broke, the outdoor conditions just got harder.

Ductwork can be the real culprit too

Not every case is about the equipment itself. If your house has long duct runs through a hot attic, gaps at the connections, or a return that's too small for the system's blower, air can lose a surprising amount of its cooling capacity before it ever reaches a vent. This shows up as rooms far from the air handler staying noticeably warmer than rooms close to it, even though the thermostat says the system is running fine. It's harder to spot from the room itself, since nothing looks obviously wrong, but it's a common finding once someone traces the ductwork from the attic to the vent.
